ERIN… THE DISTRICT IS PROVIDING A SPACE ON CAMPUSES…LIKE THIS ONE….WHE ER STUDENTS CAN GO AND GET HELP FROM MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONS.AL <NATSOT OF CLAPPING FROM EVENT> A RIBBON CUTTING EVENT TO CELEBRATE THE ADDITION OF TWO WELLNESS CENTERS… ONE AT BOTH LA PAZ AND SAUSAL MIDDLE SCHOOLS. THESE ARE SPACES WHERE STUDENTS CAN GET HELP FOR A VARIETY OF ISSS UE LIKE SADNE, SSGRIEF, FAMILY LIFE, SEXUAL IDENTITY… PRACTICALLY ANYTHING IMPACTING A STUDENTS WL EL BEING. <THE ADMINISTRATORS AT SCHOOLS ARE T NO SPECIALIST. IN THIS THIS CENTER RIGHT HERE WILL ALLOW PEOPLE THAT THAT ARE SPECIALISTS IN THE FIELD OF MENTAL HEALTH TO ASSIST THEIR STUDENTS IN ACTUALLY GIVING BETTER SERVICE THAN, YOU KNOW, GOING TO ANYBODY ELSE.> INSIDE… A CALMING RO TOMO HE LP STUDENTS DECOMPRESS… AND A TEAM OF EXPERTS. A SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST, BEHAVIORAL SPECIALIS T, SOCIAL WORKER AND MORE. THE GOAL IS TO EQUIP EVERY MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL IN THE DISTRICT WITH A WELLNESS CENTER. TODAYS UNVEILING MARKS SEVEN TOTAL. <WE’VE INCREMENTALLY ADDED THREE, TWO OR THREA E YEAR FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS. SO OBVIOUSLY FINANCIAL RESOURCES ARE A COMPONENT OF THAT AS WELL AS BEING ABLE TO STAFF THE ES WITH THE RIGHT STAFFING. SO THESE RESOURCE CENTERS NEED THAT> STUDENTS AND FAMILIES IN THE SALINAS LLVAEY FACE TOUGH CHALLENGES. LIKE LANGUAGE BARRIERS, THE RISING COST OF HOUSING, AND THE NGLO HOURS PARENTS FACE WORKING IN AG <WE HAVE A LOT OF PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY THAT ARE MONOLINGUAL SPANISH SPEAKERS WHO THE PARENTS ARE FIT THAT CATEGORY. AND SO THEIR KIDS ARE COMING INTO ANOTHER WORLD. THEY’RE COMING INTO AN ENGLISH SPEAKING WORLD.> ACCORDING TO RUBIO, E TH DISTRICT HAS 16 TO 17 THOUSAND STUDENT S, OF THAT ABOUT 80% ARE LATINO. BUT, THESE WELLNS ES CENTERS ARE STAFFED WITH SPANISH SPEAKERS. MORE WELLNESS CENTERS ARE ANTICIPATED TO BE BUILT BY NEXT YEAR. AS FOR THE SCHOOLS THAT DON’T HAVE IT YET… THEY STILL HAVA E SOCIAL WORKER ON CAMPUS. RE

Salinas Union High School District adds two wellness centers

The Salinas Union High School District unveiled two additional wellness centers at La Paz and El Sausal middle school, Thursday. The centers are equipped with a comfort room, to help students decompress, and a team of mental health experts, which includes: behavioral health specialists, school psychologists, intervention specialists, social workers and counselors. “Sometimes the administrators at schools, in general, are not specialists in this . So this center right here will allow people that are specialists in the field of mental health to assist their students in actually giving better service than anybody else,” Carlos Rubio, the vice president of the school board of trustees, said. Now the district has seven wellness centers in total. Ultimately, the goal is to have a wellness center at all 12 high schools and middle schools in the district. To address the needs of the student population, a majority of the staff speak Spanish. Rubio, the district has about 16,500 students; 80% speak Spanish. “We have a lot of people in our community that are monolingual Spanish speakers whose parents fit that category. And so their kids are coming in to another world, they’re coming to into English speaking world,” Rubio said.
